Oh, you noticed.
Welcome, then, to BNTTP: OBOANMH - a new blog with a new and much more exciting purpose. Here’s the elevator explanation…
I’ve been blogging in various formats since - Jesus - 2001, before it was even called blogging, but always in an unfocussed and unstructured way. When I could be arsed, basically.
But then things got interesting after I dumped my lease in London, sold most of my stuff and decided to live the life of a technomad, travelling the world using new media to facilitate a ridiculously high and fun standard of living. As I started blogging more regularly - about my tech-driven travels and the various people I encountered along the way - traffic to my old blog went through the roof. The traffic and the huge amount of positive feedback (even from people I’d been a bit mean to) made me wonder whether I should take blogging a bit more seriously.
And so when Orion suggested I might do something cool and onliney to promote the book (and offered to pay me to do it - I am a whore after all), the planets of opportunity and motive became aligned.
And so, after a lot of preparation packed into a very short space of time, here we are. A new daily blog - tracking my ongoing mission to use the Internet to become rich and famous - or at least to fake it in spectacular style. As a side-effect of that mission, it will also feature all manner of curious online experiments and semi-regular features, all wrapped up in my unsolicited musings on the fucked up world of web celebrity, Internet entrepreneurship and the joys and practicalities of living virtually.
Also, as the book nears publication, I’ll be posting sample chapters and other snippets, experimenting with video and podcasting and even publishing a totally exclusive ‘what happened next’ bonus chapter that you can stick in to the back of the book. I’m also doing various live things, including an event at the Edinburgh Book Festival in August - watch this space for details.
Oh, and because this is only the next stage in a very long story, I’ve moved over pretty much everything from the old blog. And thanks to the new format1, it’s now all searchable and pretty.
It’s a dull cliche - but I’d love it if you’d like to get involved. Thanks to Orion’s generous support, I have an opportunity to try some fun things - so if you have ideas for features, travel destinations or really anything else, then post a comment or email me using the address in the middle column and let’s get started. Oli Barrett has already suggested that I write a thriller using only Twitter status updates and The Girl has demanded - demanded - that I write funny haiku about sex and tech. Sounds good to me.
Ok, it’s 5am in Spain and I’ve been dicking about with Wordpress templates all day. I have to say, I’m really happy with how it’s turned out. But, you know, early days.
